Re: YORKSGIVING 30 September 2023 @6pm
Preparations are underway! A volunteer to pick up fresh corn on the cob on the way up, if it's still available, would be much appreciated. (Tom F knows of a great roadside stand...) As with last year, any and all dishes brought to share are most welcome. We particularly could use sides, so please br...

Promotional Events 2023
Today we flew the YSA flag at the Brampton Flying Club, as part of their annual Airport Day. As with AVWorld's Customer Appreciation Day, not many intros sold. But, a lot of genuine interest and a lot of questions from a lot of people. A lot more people know about our sport today than did yesterday,...

Thanks Sarah! Yes, I'm also going to try a food drive this year. It's the weekend before Thanksgiving, so it's particularly apropos to donate what we can to a local food bank. Nobody, and I mean nobody, should go hungry on Thanksgiving - the Celebration Of Plenty. If you're shopping in the days befo...

Promotional events in 2023
At AVWorld's customer appreciation day, a fun time was had by all. Not many intro flights sold directly, but oh boy, was there a lot of interest from both professional and recreational pilots, people who haven't flown in a while, and people looking for more cost effective ways to enjoy flying. Mike,...

Re: Interpreting NOAA Soundings
Hi Ken, How could I open the skew-T log-P graphs for Arthur or YSA (CPC3)?. When I entered the location produce no data when the chart is open. The same happen if I enter the coordinates of the field. The website is finicky. It expects decimal degrees, with no spaces, or it just flakes out, offerin...

In Petrolia, also in Lambton county, the CAPE reached over 3800 on the 20th. This is what that looked like on the ground:

Interpreting NOAA Soundings
https://rucsoundings.noaa.gov/ While there are many ways to forecast soaring weather, I've found the NOAA soundings site to be the most accurate, although it does require a modicum of practice. Interpreting them is a perishable skill, I've found. So today, with a thunderstorm overhead, it's a good d...

Southern Ontario Gliding Associtaion
We had the pleasure of a visit from Rod Reiger of SOGA on Wednesday. He came to ask us a few questions about our grass cutting methods and equipment, as they've recently built two new runways, and the zero turn homeowner's mower they currently use just isn't cutting it anymore (pun intended). I had ...

Flying In Wildfire Smoke: advice from a professional firebomber and glider pilot
All, The topic of flying gliders in wildfire smoke came up at a recent meeting of Canadian soaring club safety officers (yes, we have meetings... Zoom is a marvelous tool). David Gagliardi, safety officer for the Alberni Valley Soaring Association is a glider pilot with 17 years' experience as an ae...
