2024 Fly-In And Open House, June 22nd-23rd (The Longest Day)

As many of you will know, we will host an Open Day again this year, where we hope for 100+ cars with a random number of occupants to visit us, to look at our aircraft on the ground, to watch/participate in intro flying, to watch 4 aircraft from the WW1 museum fly. Possibly several interesting aircra...

2023 York Soaring Safety Report

I've written our 2023 safety report. It will be posted to the archives section. The version of the safety report posted here is intended for our eyes only. The version used for sending our safety report to SAC is heavily abridged, and includes none of my personal observations/opinions that you will ...

Re: The Risk Of Dying Doing What We Love

We always remind people that flying is safer than driving. But to this I pose two questions:
  • How many dead pilots do you know?
  • How many of them died in a car?
Oh, and there is a big flaw in the statistics in my post. I'm hoping somebody can comment on it.

Re: Self-Launching Gliders are the way of the future

I would also add that if the retrieve vehicle has a manual transmission, be sure that somebody on your retrieve crew can drive it, and that that person commits to awaiting your return to the field. And for electric vehicles, make absolutely sure they're fully charged. Those of us that don't drive th...

Re: Self-Launching Gliders are the way of the future

No one mentioned intros or new pilots but Tim spoke of experienced senior pilots that are limited when operations are not fully online. Sorry - I incorrectly inferred that you were talking about attracting intros and new pilots. You're right, it would be a very good option for existing members. I d...

Re: Self-Launching Gliders are the way of the future

I think that something similiar and possibly less costly would attract many more clients in addition to what you mentioned. I disagree. Nobody buys an intro flight from or joins a club because they have a fancypants motorglider. The general public comes for intros to cross something off a bucket li...

The Risk Of Dying Doing What We Love

I had read this essay some time ago and mentioned it in casual conversation with a few people. I found the disbelief surprising — a cognitive dissonance. It's an empirical study that examines deaths vs. hours of activity across a large number of sports/activities. This may surprise many, but the cha...

Re: Interpreting NOAA Soundings

Hi Ken, How could I open the skew-T log-P graphs for Arthur or YSA (CPC3)?. When I entered the location produce no data when the chart is open. The same happen if I enter the coordinates of the field. The website is finicky. It expects decimal degrees, with no spaces, or it just flakes out, offerin...

Re: Interpreting NOAA Soundings

In Petrolia, also in Lambton county, the CAPE reached over 3800 on the 20th. This is what that looked like on the ground:
