Southern Ontario Gliding Associtaion

Post by Kenneth Voort »

We had the pleasure of a visit from Rod Reiger of SOGA on Wednesday. He came to ask us a few questions about our grass cutting methods and equipment, as they've recently built two new runways, and the zero turn homeowner's mower they currently use just isn't cutting it anymore (pun intended).

I had the chance to show off C-GRAS and our army of push mowers, make nice with a fellow aviator, and talk up YSA. He accepted a promotional poster for our August fly-in, and offered to put it up in their clubhouse. I've since invited them to Saturday's barbecue, so please give them a warm welcome if they do come.

They used to be very close to us — close enough that we needed special tow procedures to avoid complications. Their new location is on the Amaranth East Luther Townline, one concession east of the road to Grand Valley and 2 miles south of 89. Their main runway, roughly 09/27, is 2000' long and 70' wide; just wide enough to land an 18m glider if you need a bailout. They also have a perpendicular, roughly 00/18 runway of 1000', and the two new cross runways at 45° angles to them, at 1300'. They're all 70' wide. They now have more runways than we do...

This is their location:

And this is a photo of the field taken this year, viewed from the north, illustrating the all the current runways:

With grace and beauty, Strength and cunning She’ll stay aloft — until; Inevitably — she loses. And must glide earthward. And lie there helpless, Lovesick for the sky.
