Presidents Report October 2023

Post by Dave Bax »

Attendance by members has become minimal, making it pointless for the dedicated few to turn up mid-week, unless an obviously interesting day. Check the forum in advance of coming midweek. During the weekend there are many non flying jobs that need to be done (see below).

The propane tanks have been refilled in both at the clubhouse and workshop. If you start up the fire in the clubhouse, please be sure to turn it off before leaving.

The large green Waste Management container near the main hangar has been emptied.

The accumulation (over the years) of large metal waste near the WM container, and also the metal waste from the campground, has been cutup and disposed of (thanks Barry and Tom).

The demolition of the old farmhouse by Mennonites has been confirmed for December. At the end of the demolition all non stone waste will be removed from our property, stone at and above basement level will go into the foundations and the ground will be roughly leveled and surrounding earth put on top. The board have not yet made any decision about the future use for this area. The tall stainless steel chimney will be retained by YSA, if anyone thinks of a good use for it let me know. It has considerable value, but may be donated.

A tow plane planning committee has been initiated, chaired by Doug. If any member has particular views regarding the makeup and size of the towplane fleet, please speak to Doug in the first instance.

The glider fleet planning committee will be resurrected, probably chaired by Tony Firmin. The committee will have members that primarily do significant personal flying on club aircraft, ideally more than one type. At least one member involved primarily in training (e.g. CFI and/or Director of Operations) will be included. If any member has particular views on the glider fleet, run them in the first instance passed Wayne and then let me know.

YSB has been brought back to life, signed off by our AME and ready for Rob to test fly.

The grass on the new 90ft wide 05/23 is still looking good. However, this was intended only as a temporary measure until the 270ft strip immediately to the north of that 90ft was cleared, leveled, fertilized and seeded. That has now happened and we expect the grass to be good in the Spring. If it is, then 05/23 will be 3 times the current width with the current 90ft strip being given over to our leasing farmer (Doug Shaw). Doug will not cultivate that 90ft strip until we are happy with the 270ft strip (so we will have a fallback if necessary).

The area outside the west door to the clubhouse has been leveled, largely cleared of stone/gravel and seeded. We will assess the quality of the grass area in the spring and determine whether to continue with grass or build a deck (one level only) or replace with stone (loose gravel or patio).

Paul Moggach has been working on additional storage options in the main hangar (partly to store aircraft parts that have currently been stored at our AME's hangar).

Our K21 trailer now houses the Youth Flight K21 which will be stored in the small hangar this winter (at normal club rates).

We now have a power pilot medical doctor member(Jim) , who trained this year on 2-33 and has now also soloed on K21, he has examined/refreshed and reorganized the first aid equipment in the office. For those in need, the kit is located on the upper two shelves of the first grey cabinet in the office. The kit will be maintained by Jim only, if you consider something missing or for whatever reason you use a significant amount of the kit, please let Jim know.

Major and minor projects to be performed this year:

* Pull up the main clubhouse floor and cork underlay (not kitchen/bathroom/classroom/office)

* Deal with any fungus in the clubhouse

* The insulation of the three cabins to be completed.

* The removal of approximately 400ft of fencing on our southern border opposite runway 32. Surprisingly there are close to 100 posts to be removed in that 400ft, about 20% of them metal, 80% wood. The metal removal will be a challenge. We have permission from the fence owner to remove what we need to.

* Bring down the two windsocks

*Hangar packing the weekend of 28th October (see specific post on this forum)

*Water shutoff (see the same specific post on this Forum)

* The fibre connection between Clubhouse and workshop needs completion

Volunteers for all these projects are needed, please make yourselves known (to Paul Chalifour for clubhouse/campground related. To Rob re windsock removal. To Tom re fence removal. Just turn up for hangar repacking!).

Thanks to all who have helped with non flying projects this season.
