JIM CARPENTER
April 24, 1937 – June 14, 2024
Jim Edwin Carpenter passed away peacefully at Hillsdale Estates, Oshawa, on June 14, 2024, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of over thirty years, Agda Davies, his sisters Margaret and Norma, and brother Lloyd. He is survived by his brother Wayne, by his son Jason and daughter Nadine from his previous marriage to Frauke Illing, and by stepdaughter Daphne Rayner.
The family wishes to acknowledge with gratitude the remarkable care provided by Teisha Jordan, and the staff at Hillsdale Estates.
Jim was a creative genius in the world of Canadian design and advertising. While at Don Watt and Associates, he was responsible for the branding of several major organizations and product lines such as Loblaws and “no name”. When he branched out to form his own studio, Jim Carpenter and Company, he designed several iconic logos including those for Milk and the Liberal Party of Canada. He is especially remembered, however, for his mentorship to others, and for his booming laugh and a smile that could light up any room.
While graphic design was his forte, Jim’s true passion was flight. He was an award-winning glider pilot and Canadian champion, competing across North America and as far afield as Argentina and Australia.
Friends and family are invited to join in a celebration of Jim’s life, which will be held on July 11, 2024, at the Thornton Funeral Centre, 1200 Thornton Road North, Oshawa, from 2:30 to 5:00 p.m.
Flowers are gratefully declined, however donations in Jim’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, or a charity of your choice.
