Line Chief Preliminary Results
Posted: Tue Jul 23, 2024 7:32 am
We had formal line-chiefs for 7 of the last 8 weekend days (i.e. four AM shifts and three PM shifts Sat/Sun for 2 weekends).
Generally they worked very well, in conjunction with the waiting list sheet and the intro waiver sheet (replacing yellow cards). It seems very prudent to continue this policy through the rest of the season.
Problems that occurred, ideally not to be repeated:
2 line-chiefs removed themselves during their shift (one to fly, one to do other work for the club). This is not what we want. We need consistency. a 4 hour duty (either 10-1400 or 1400-1800) is not that onerous compared to the many volunteer hours put in by some members of the club in other areas. Please do not deviate from the task, apart from wash room breaks. It would also be most helpful if the PM line-chief shows up a few minutes early to be briefed properly by the AM line-chief as to what/why certain things are happening.
For one Sunday PM shift there was no line-chief scheduled/volunteer. The Board decision is that the operation then stops until a responsible person takes the duty (not a very junior member, not four members doing one hour each, not ignore the requirement and just someone does the flight sheet).
A couple of members hanging around the flight line refusing to assist the line chief. Simply those members do not fly that day until they put in at least a minimal amount of effort to support others to fly. Line-chiefs are empowered to enforce that, or report to a Board member who will enforce that.
End of day is still a recurring problem, last Saturday there were 3 flights without landing time, 1 flight without tow height. Just more time needed by other volunteers to track down correct data when all that is need is for EVERY pilot to check the flight sheet on landing.
Intro processing: regarding payment all went well, regarding scheduling to fly on time all went well. One incident over the waiver not being signed. Ensuring the waiver is signed is tiresome, but more important than collecting the money, we have never had an incident/claim against us, but if/when we do we had better have the waiver signed. From a legal perspective, a signed waiver does not give us much in court BUT the lack of a signed waiver will count heavily against us.
Lastly, please give your preferred line-chief date(s) to Sarah as soon as possible. From 1st August Sarah will simply assign those not signed up randomly to empty slots in August and September. If you so not attend on your slot day, you do not fly until you have found the time to so do.
