Licence Privileges

Licenced glider pilots may fly any aircraft classified as a glider solo, including motorgliders. They may also carry passengers if, current (have at least 5 flights in gliders in the last 6 months or 2 proficiency flights with an instructor), and proficient (have completed the requirements of the biennial flight review).  They are also not restricted to flights within 25 nautical miles of the point of departure. Note that further restrictions may be placed on pilots by their local flight operation. There is a wide range in the performance and handling characteristics of various gliders, and the skills required to fly beyond the local gliding boundaries. For safety’s sake pilots should expect that they demonstrate their competence before being allowed to exercise these different privileges.

Seems simple enough! The fun part of course is the flight training and the magic of soaring flight. For more specific information on flight training you may want to consult the Flightline Guide to Gliding, which has everything you need to know to get started. Otherwise we are off on our journey to prepare for the Transport Canada examination. Transport Canada’s requirements are aimed at understanding how to safely operate a glider in Canadian airspace, and well worth the effort to learn them.
