Parts of a Glider

Many of the parts of a glider have fallen into common use. Most people know about wings and the cockpit. Some terms are more obscure. The body of the aircraft is known as the fuselage and the tail section the empennage. The horizontal wing in the tail is called the horizontal stabilizer and the flap that moves with it is called the elevator. There is a vertical fin and the flap that moves with it is called the rudder. On the wings there are outboard flaps that move in opposition to one another called the ailerons. Inboard flaps are called just that and move in the same direction on both sides. Fore is towards the front and aft towards the tail. There are devices that can be raised and lower from the wings, called spoilers. Gliders also come with a hook underneath for attaching a rope or cable that is used for launching.
