Student Pilot Permit

Student pilot permits are issued at the glider pilot training institution by persons authorized by Transport
Canada and require photocopies of documents that can prove the applicants age and citizenship. However,
to hold the student pilot permit you must meet certain minimum medical requirements. For gliders
these are met by filling out a Medical Declaration (Form #26-0297). This form is then signed, witnessed,
and submitted to a Transport Canada regional office, which will issue a medical certificate.
Student pilots flying solo, must carry both the student pilot permit and the medical certificate with them
while flying. Also, a Transport Canada file number is associated with these documents, which is necessary
to write the glider pilot examinations and apply for the glider pilot licence. That’s why it’s important
to submit these documents as soon as is possible. The student pilot permit and medical certificate
are valid for 60 months. There are other more restrictive medical categories, but they are not required
for basic flight training. While a separate Student Pilot Permit is required for each category of aircraft
for which one may be receiving instruction, only one medical certificate is necessary.
