Air Exercise

Orientation and Lookout - Audio/Text

Follow through lightly on the controls...I have control…(Student says “You have control”.)
We must learn to orient ourselves relative to the airport...
This is best done when the aircraft is in level flight like now...
If you are lost,… avoid continuous circling…
It is better to change direction about a quarter circle…
Then come level again and take a new look…

First we find landmarks in the distance… then we draw our attention in closer…
Notice that town ahead with the ponds,… and the larger lakes to the right.
We use these and the road to the left to locate the airfield…

I am going to turn the aircraft to the right...  However first we must do a good lookout…
Look ahead…  The horizon is a line that divides the earth and the sky…
While we can see things above and below the horizon those objects near the horizon are at the same altitude as we are...
For right turns we start to the far left...  Look beyond the left wing tip...
Now look to the left…
Look ahead…
Look to the right…
Look far right, beyond the right wingtip…
All clear…?
Now look ahead...
I keep looking ahead now until the turn is established...
Once I am in the turn now I can look around again, starting from right to left...
I am going to level out, so I look ahead...
Once we are level, we can look around again...

Let’s try looking for landmarks in the distance and then locate the airfield…
I am going to do a turn towards the airfield.  How do we do the lookout?...
