Axes of Motion

Like other aircraft gliders move in three directions in response to control inputs. Movement about the longitudinal axis is controlled by the ailerons in the wings and is called roll. Motion about the lateral axis is controlled by the elevator in the tail and is known as pitch. Finally movement about the normal axis is controlled by the rudder and is termed yaw. In the cockpit roll is controlled by moving the control column or stick from side to side. Pitch is done by moving the stick forwards and backwards, and yaw is produced by moving the pedals on the floor to the right or left.
