Flight Awareness

Flight awareness is a fundamental but more complex skill to acquire. It can be guided by the S.O.A.R. acronym, which combines situational, option, and action awareness with the habit of repeating the process.

Situational awareness consists of recognizing the characteristics of the situation at hand. These relate to the time to make decisions, what types of activities are best to pursue, and where it is most appropriate to focus our attention. Option awareness is understanding what paths are available to us in a given situation. Rarely is there only one way to go. The goal is to pick the best path. Action awareness is about how we perform. Do we act or not act? How much do we do? When do we do things?

The repeat part is concerned with the habits and patterns that we follow. Do these match the process for safe flight?
