Launch to Free Flight

The students should either be following through on the controls during all phases of flight or actually be doing the flying themselves. If instructors wish to question the student or give detailed instruction during this phase, they should take control of the aircraft and then return it to the student when the questioning or instruction is done. It is still very much a period when the student is learning control and so they should not be cluttered up with planning activities during the red and yellow situations.

The students should demonstrate good judgement of both the first decision height of 300 feet and the landing decision height of a 1000 feet. While the student should be doing most of the flying, below 1000 feet the instructor should be prepared to take over at any time. Again the general rule is prompt for the correct action once, and if it is not executed, take over rectify the problem, and then return control to the student (“Don’t fool around below 1000 feet!”)..
