Terminology

When we move the aircraft about the vertical axis we produce what is termed yaw. The longitudinal axis of the aircraft is represented as an imaginary line running from the nose to the tail. Movements about the longitudinal axis are called roll or bank. The lateral axis is represented as an imaginary line drawn from wingtip to wingtip. Movements about the lateral axis are termed pitch. It is also worthwhile at this stage to refer to using the term the level attitude when referring to keeping the wings level about the longitudinal axis.  In the same light, balance is a good term to use when we are describing the fore and aft attitude about the lateral axis (balanced on the main wheels). Yawing movements are best described by the term ‘swinging’ as with ‘the nose will begin swinging across the horizon’.
