General Safety Considerations

While safety is everyone’s concern the Line Chief should consider it to be a special duty to keep an eye open for anything that could lead to a potentially dangerous situation and then, if he has any concerns, do something about it. It is not intended to give a complete list of things to watch for but the following are a few of the more likely scenarios.

  • Deteriorating weather conditions: Conditions must be above VFR minima with acceptable winds.  Consider stopping flying.
  • Increasing cross winds:  Consider change in runway.
  • Poor quality of take-offs and landings by solo pilots. Usually associated with increasing crosswinds.  Consider requiring a flight with an instructor.
  • Overworked instructors and tow pilots:  Suggest they take a break.
